  • The Fiero Prologue

    By Skywurz | Tue, 12/29/2020 - 19:09
    • Read more about The Fiero Prologue

Im going to start off by saying that most of this was written in an email to a fellow Fiero enthusiast giving my background in Fieros. I have told this story a few times now and figure ill just toss it up as I do not have any Fiero stuff on the site as of this post. This is due to the Fiero project coming and being put into mothballs before the site.

So this story begins with me being at home looking for things to go do outside of the house because of COVID. I was browsing free stuff on letgo when suddenly a motorcycle showed up. Now typically this is not something that grabs my attention, but this one was different. I used to have a 1999 VFR800 but sold it back in 2011. Here are some photos.

I have been getting a lot of interest from people when i tell them i built my own motorcycle tracker and website to support it. Unfortunately its not something that is easy to demo without giving people the keys to see all sorts of stuff. What i finally did was make a demo version with data from a demo ride.

I 3D Printed the enclosures for the electronics.

So I found out that my local DMV was open on Saturday. I decided I wanted to get the paperwork rolling before i got too much deeper. I got to the DMV and after about 2 hours walked away being told that they could do a VIN verification at the DMV if i brought the bike in. I looked at the paperwork and it said it needed to go to CHP because it was a Salvage but because it was restored i figured the paperwork was off and what the person told me was true. I rented a trailer and put the bike back together and loaded it up.

So I will start off with back in my heyday I would browse Craig's List and shoot out some low ball offers on things that look interesting. Sometimes it would work and id get a neat project to wrench on for awhile then id get board and sell it. Most of the time i made money and this is just what i did for a few years in high-school before i graduated and got a real job. over the years sometimes id pick up a random project here and there.

So with 6108 miles on my rear tire and only 2mm of tread left with 1 plug and a slow leak I decided it was time to replace it. The manual says at 2mm its time to replace the tire.

So after 1000 miles my rear tire finally got to the limit and also started a slow leak. I changed out the tire and found the other half of the pop-rivet. I guess this is why you should properly repair tires. I got 6100 miles out of this tire.

So this is my first crack at pewter casting and i decided to try something really really hard.. a bell. yes bells are harder to make than they seem like they should be. I made a bell in cad and 3d printed it. i made a false bell out of plaster and put it all in sand. I cut up a old pewter mug and tossed it in the forge.

So I got a second hand Throttlemeister off of the little e big B for a good price because it was involved in a tip over. It was supposedly off of a Multistrada 1200. I looked it over and thought it would fit the SuperSport so i ordered it.

Once i got it in it was immediately obvious that it was not, I guess my research was off.

So instead of just a paint job i now needed to find a way to mount this. I got to work with bits i had around.

So if you are just tuning in things started in this thread https://www.ducatisupersport939.net/forum/385-wheels-tires/15742-plug-patch.html where i found that most places wont patch tires. I went with a plug option but have had issues in the past with old school string plugs eventually drying and falling out. This was mostly on ATVs but this would be catastrophic and possibly deadly on a sports bike. I found a type of plug that has been around for awhile but i had never seen before.

As some of you may know or have experienced some of our mirrors are really terrible. We have a thread that is over a year old and many many pages long with people detailing out issues and new mirror versions and so on. This fix below is for fixing your mirror if it is loose in the housing. some of you are like jeeze thanks what are you talking about exactly. Well lets go to your mirror and tap on it a little. Does the glass kinda move around more than it should? Kinda like its loose from what ever its mounted to in the back? This fix will probably help.
